“Orca Moon” was commissioned to commemorate Tokitae (aka Lolita), who was captured in Whidbey Island’s Penn Cove in 1970. She was estimated to be 3-6 years old at the time of her capture, and spent the remainder of her life on display at The Miami Seaquarium and Seaworld San Diego. She died in 2023 while plans were being made to return her to her native Puget Sound waters. News footage of her violent capture made headlines and played a large role in prompting the creation of laws protecting these endangered animals. In this sculpture, Georgia envisions Tokitae reunited with her mother.
